WHAT A WEEKEND!

Weather Summary for May 17 – 24

If I could somehow bottle yesterday’s weather, and sell it on eBay, I’d be a millionaire in no time.  Wasn’t it absolutely gorgeous!  In the meantime though, I can tell you today’s weather be just as delightful.  (Unfortunately, I’m not making a million doing this.  But, sharing the good news with you is equally as satisfying—ahem, COUGH, hack, hack.)

But, seriously… today?  Beautiful.   A frontal boundary to our south will stay there through the weekend.  And that’s good for us.  Next week, an area of high pressure shifts off shore forcing our wind to blow from the southeast.  As a result, the air will turn moister and clouds will be more prevalent.  And, that’s about as clear an idea ofwhat’s likely to happen as I have at this point.

Here’s the forecast I’ve come up with for you.

TODAY—If you’ve got the day off, lucky you.  Crystal clear with a high in the mid 70s.

TONIGHT—Clear skies.  60s after 8, 50s after midnight.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Baseball caps and shades is the order of the day.  A high in the low 70s.                                                    Today begins NATIONAL SAFE BOATING WEEK.  If you’ll be heading out on the river or an area lake, WEAR YOUR LIFE PRESERVER and, for Pete’s sake, DON’T BOAT AND DRIVE.  It is possible to have fun and be safe, too.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Partly cloudy, in the 60s after sunset.

SUNDAY—Partly sunny, 70-ish.

The Workweek

MONDAY—High pressure repositions off the East Coast turning our winds to E-SE.  So, look for cloudy skies to start, then partly sunny and mild, around 70.

TUESDAY—Same deal.  Some afternoon sunshine, 70.

WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY and FRIDAY—I’ve lumped these together because during this stretch, somewhere between North Carolina and New York, there’s likely to be some heavy rain, especially in the mountains.  Since it’ll be a static pattern, we could have rain each of the three days or not.  Highs in the 60s with rain, 70s if not.  I’m leaning toward the drier side but it’s a tough call.  I just wanted you to know what we’re dealing with here.

Have a joyful weekend, my friend, even if you have to work.

MOTHER’S DAY WEATHER BEST THIS WEEKEND

 Weather Summary for May 10 – 17

We’ve had some great weekend weather recently.  This coming one will be one from column A and one from column B.  The atmospheric swirl that gave us the rain Wednesday and Thursday is gone this morning.  Another one is on its way though.  It’ll dampen your outdoor plans tomorrow, but won’t stay around long.  Whether you’re getting together with mom or commemorating her, if plans take you out of doors Sunday, Mother Nature will have your back.  Here’s the forecast for the weekend and beyond.

TODAY—Some fog this morning, otherwise we’re looking good.  Partly sunny and warmer, near 80!  There’s a slight chance of a thundershower around rush hour.

TONIGHT—Mostly cloudy, warm and humid with a good chance of rain; especially after midnight.  Good sleeping weather what with the pitter-patter on your window sill.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Mostly cloudy, warm (to the 70s) and humid with a decent chance of showers and thundershowers.  By late afternoon, the sky will begin to clear up though.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clearing and mild.

SUNDAY—Sunny and less humid, still mild, around 70 by 3 o’clock.  Perfect for a picnic lunch at the park.  Some afternoon wind gusts.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Sunny, low humidity, northwest wind.  Afternoon clouds will threaten, but not more than a sprinkle will reach the ground.  It will be kinda chilly under those clouds.  The high may occur around noon, then drop to the 50s after that.

TUESDAY—Sunny and a little milder.

WEDNESDAY—A chance of rain returns.

THURSDAY—By this point, it’s thoroughly unclear as to what’s going to happen weatherwise.  The storm track will be one that’s unstable.  A storm may or may not form in the flow.  So, if you’ll permit me, I’d like to just throw in a little of this and a little of that to account for any possibility.  How does, “Partly cloudy with a chance of showers sound for this day and FRIDAY?

WHAT’S NOT TO LIKE?!

Weather Summary for the period May 3 – 10

Today concludes Severe Weather Awareness Week in New York State.  Fortunately the weather this week was good so all of the National Weather Service programs got off without any stormy interference.  And the stretch of great weather continues today, right through the weekend.

The weather pattern right now is stalled.  While that’s a good thing for us, the folks from Kansas City to  Memphis to Savannah aren’t as happy about it since they’ve been stuck under the clouds for a while and will be right through the weekend.  The next storm to affect us is centered in Missouri and Kansas this morning where it’s barely moving.  And, I don’t think we’ll get any rain from this one until next Wednesday!  So, here’s the good news day by day.

TODAY—Some clouds this morning, then Sunny and nice.  Near 70 by mid-afternoon.

TONIGHT—Clear skies.  A sweater or light jacket is recommended for evening outers.  60s, dropping to the 50s by midnight.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Mostly Sunny and nice; in the 70’s this afternoon.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Nice and cool.

SUNDAY—A.M. clouds; then Sunny.  Low 70s by afternoon.  What a weekend!  Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

The Workweek

MONDAY—Ditto.  (not you, Rush.)

TUESDAY—looks very good, too, as the mild weather continues.

WEDNESDAY—may be on the cloudy side with a chance of rain.  The storm I mentioned earlier has been cut off from the winds that guide these kinds of things, so a slow creep to the east is usually a good bet.  But I wouldn’t bet your mortgage on the exact timing of this.  The rain could be either a little faster or slower getting here.  Right now, we’ll say Wednesday since the computer models are leaning in that direction.

THURSDAY—a chance of rain again, continued mild.  Then, it looks like the weather pattern will pick up speed.  A cold front may be on the doorstep.

FRIDAY—Sunny and refreshing with a northwest wind for the first time in a while.

PERFETTO!

That’s right, perfect!  Highs in the 60s every day!

This next stretch of weather will be some of the finest in the country.  A cold front slid through overnight leaving us with a very comfortable air mass that will sit over us for the next week!  That’s right, week!  The conveyor belt of storms will remain well north of us.  High pressure will reign supreme over the Northeast.   And, if you don’t get outside this weekend for a dose of vitamin D, you’ll be missing out.  By the way, there are two big civic events you can be part of this weekend.  Read on.

Here’s the forecast…

TODAY—We’re looking good.  Scan the eastern sky across the Hudson River this morning and you’ll see the departing clouds associated with a cold front headed away from us.  Plenty of sunshine today with a light northwesterly wind.

TONIGHT—Clear and chilly with calm air.  Frost and valley fog later on a good bet.  Thermometer readings in the 30s by sunrise.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—If you’re taking part in the Newburgh Community Cleanup, take a sun hat.  You don’t want to get a sun burn which is easy to do early in the season.  Stay hydrated too.  It’ll be warm under the sun which is as high in the sky now as it is in the dog days of August!

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clear skies.

SUNDAY—Sunny with afternoon cloud puffs.  The Walk for Housing, Habitat Newburgh’s annual fundraiser, will take place in perfect weather.

The Work Week

MONDAY—Partly cloudy.

TUESDAY—Mostly sunny.

As you can see, we’re establishing a pattern here.  High pressure, a fair weather maker will be in charge this week.  So the same forecast holds for WEDNESDAY, THURSDAY and FRIDAY.  Ample sunshine with mild days and cool nights are on tap for the entire Hudson Valley.

CLOUDS CLEAR BY THE WEEKEND

Weather summary for April 12 – 19, 2013

Once the rain ends later today, it’s lookin’ good for Saturday and Sunday.  Then, like we’ll have a repeat of this week’s weather next week.  This week’s warmest day was Tuesday (730 was the high temperature).  And, next Tuesday will have the distinction as the warmest day of that week, too.

In the meantime, a cold front remains well south of us this morning.  From the Mason-Dixon Line to the Carolinas there’s a chance of dangerous thunderstorms.  But this far north the atmosphere continues cool and stable.  Since it’s warm and moist up in the clouds however, some of today’s rain will be heavy.  So, please slow down on the road if the visibility gets too limited.  No need to force it.

Drier, westerly winds will return in time for the weekend and the opening night of racing at the Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown.  You can check out their website for details.

Here we go, my friend.

TODAY—Periods of heavy rain and continued cool.

TONIGHT—Only some remnant light rain or drizzle early on, then just cloudy after midnight.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Nice day, all in all.  Not perfect, but a definite improvement over the last two days.  The sky will average out partly cloudy with more sun in the a.m. and more clouds in the p.m.  It will be warmer, that’s for sure.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clearing and cooler.  Patchy frost in wind-sheltered valleys.

SUNDAY—Sunny and seasonably mild.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Sunny for starters, then it’ll cloud up, and rain down at night.  Nothing serious or heavy is anticipated.

TUESDAY—Partly cloudy and warmer.

WEDNESDAY—On the cloudy side, still mild.  Rain holds off until…

THURSDAY—Rain (just like yesterday), some of it heavy.  Thundershowers will accompany this as a strong cold front approaches from the west.

FRIDAY—Windy, drier and cooler with partial clearing in the wake of the front.

APRIL SHOWERS BRING MAY FLOWERS – Weather Summary

Despite the title of this piece, our weekend is shaping up to be a good one weather-wise.   A storm off the East Coast accounts for this morning’s clouds.  But, it’s moving away from us.  So, aside from some light rain in Rockland and Westchester counties this morning, we’re good to go through Sunday.

A cold front will slide across the Hudson Valley today, ushering in cool, dry air for the weekend.  Another, weaker front will do the same thing Sunday night.  That one, however, will hang around and be the focus for unsettled weather most of next week.  While a work week of wet roads for rush hour may not tickle your fancy, if you’re a gardener, it just might be what the doctor ordered.

So, here’s the forecast.

TODAY—Some clouds this morning, then sunny with a northwest wind.  Nice day.

TONIGHT—Clear and windy this evening; then subfreezing cold after midnight.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Cold to start, and sunny to start.  Then, a shield of cirrus clouds will dim the sunshine this afternoon, limiting its warmth.  So, veiled sunshine and cool sums up the day.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Veiled star shine, not as cold.

SUNDAY—Cloudy, then partly cloudy and milder.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Just clouds with a chance of rain toward evening and overnight.

TUESDAY—Another cloudy one with a morning chance of rain.

WEDNESDAY—A 100% chance of clouds, maybe a little drizzle.  Cool.  East wind.

THURSDAY—Ditto, with a better chance of rain, heavier rain.  Cool.  Persistent wind off the Atlantic.

FRIDAY—Rain and thundershowers.

MORE SPRINGLIKE – Weather Summary for March 29 – April 5

From us weather geeks at The Sentinel, Happy Easter to you and yours.

The weather broke just in time for Holy Week.  All of the snow is gone.  The temperature readings are running about average now (highs in the low 50’s, for example).  So all is right with the world, weatherwise, that is.

We’re in a pattern now dominated by the northern branch of the polar jet stream. Translation? Temperatures will be near or slightly below normal for the next week and precipitation, all liquid, will not play a major role in our lives.  Will it be mild enough to put tender plants in the ground?  Not yet.  The average date of our last frost is in late April.  Here’s your forecast.

TODAY—Sunshine this Good Friday morning.  Then, like yesterday, clouding up this afternoon.  Chances are good you won’t encounter an afternoon shower.

TONIGHT—Partly cloudy sums it up.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—Nice, in a word, as the atmosphere stabilizes.   For the Easter Egg Hunt at Downing Park in Newburgh at 11 o’clock, it’ll be sunny with light winds and a temperature of 43F.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clear skies.

SUNDAY—No need for a plastic cap on your Easter bonnet, but say yes to an extra stick pin.  It’ll be mostly sunny and seasonably mild on your way to church.  But, clouds will develop and the wind will pick up by early afternoon.  I expect some rain in here by 7 in the evening, and probably end by midnight.  Nothing heavy.   So, all in all, it’ll be a great holiday weekend.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Sunny to start with instability cumulus clouds forming.  It’ll be very mild, too.  Afternoon showers with some very gusty winds will herald the approach of a cold front.

TUESDAY—Sunny to start with afternoon clouds, windy and cooler.

WEDNESDAY—A cold start; then wall-to-wall sunshine.  Lighter winds will make it more comfortable despite the chilly temperature readings.

THURSDAY—Partly cloudy.

FRIDAY—Mostly sunny.

Weather Summary for the period March 22 – 29, 2013

Welcome to spring!

I know.  It rings hollow to me too.  I’ll tell you, what with the Sun setting around 7:15 EDT, my body kind-of expects it to be a little warmer.  But Old Man Winter is not giving an inch!  Our average high temperature is in the upper 40’s now, but we’ll be on the low side of that most of the next seven days as you can see by the numbers in the “Local Forecast”.   Snow is covering the ground over nearly all of New York and the six states of New England.  And, given the fact that the wind will be blowing from the northwest most of the upcoming week, it’ll stay snow cold.  Fortunately, our chances of significant precipitation are low.  One wrinkle in this forecast could occur Sunday night and Monday.  Here we go, my friend.

TODAY—We’ll see varying amounts of cloud cover.  A snow flurry is possible.

TONIGHT—Partial clearing.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—A mix of sunshine and clouds.  The wind will be kicking up at times by late morning.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clear skies.

SUNDAY—What with sunshine and lighter winds, it’ll feel almost mild outside.

The Workweek—The computer models depict a storm moving quickly eastward across North Carolina and out to sea Sunday night into Monday.  If this ends up verifying we’ll stay snowfall- free.   If the storm track is north of there, there would be snow in the Lower Hudson Valley.

MONDAY—Cloudy with light snow or flurries possible in the morning.

TUESDAY—Monday’s little storm hooks a left turn at sea and becomes a nor’easter for the Canadian Maritimes.  As a result, the air pressure gradient will tighten over the Northeast U.S.  So, it’ll be windy with clouds and sun.

WEDNESDAY—Mostly cloudy and blustery.

THURSDAY—Partly cloudy and gustery.

FRIDAY—Looks ok from here; mostly sunny.

Weather Summary for the period March 15 – 22, 2013

People are starting to wonder whether last Friday’s snowfall will be our last.  Well, let’s see.  Spring does officially begin next Wednesday, the 20th (at 7:02 a.m. EDT).  But, as we all know, you certainly can’t turn your back on the last half of March, or April for that matter.  However, each passing day brings us one step closer to warm weather.  And, it’ll soon be time to schedule your bikini wax appointment, ladies, while the guys think about hitting the weight room again.

Actually, this next week temperatures are going to remain somewhat below average with highs reaching the 40s with lows in the 20s and 30s.  It won’t be a cake walk, but the chance of serious winter weather seems rather minimal at this point.

On the weather map, there’s a modest weather maker dropping light to moderate snow over the western Great Lakes area.  That disturbance will head in our general direction.  It seems that the general will direct it across Ohio to the Delmarva Peninsula Saturday and eastward into the Atlantic after that.  We’ll be on the cloudy side tonight and tomorrow, but I don’t anticipate any snow to develop this far north.  The next chance of precip moves in here late Monday.

TODAY—Sun through a veil of cirrus clouds and not quite as cold as the last two days.

TONIGHT—Mostly cloudy.

The Weekend

SATURDAY—The passage of a dry cold front keeps us cold and dry.  On the cloudy side, though.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Partly cloudy.

SUNDAY—Partly sunny.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Sun, then dim sun.   Wintry mix at night.  No accumulation on sidewalk.

TUESDAY—Gradual clearing, windy and cold.

WEDNESDAY—Sunny.

THURSDAY—Mostly cloudy with a chance of rain.

FRIDAY—Cloudy.

Weather Summary for the period March 8 – 15, 2013

Winter drags on in the Lower Hudson Valley.  Overnight, the snow began to stick and while this is no blizzard, there’s some slushy, kind’a greasy snow on the ground this morning.  And, that can be more treacherous than the powdery kind.  So, be careful when shepherding the kids across the street, for example.  Later on, after the Sun goes down, whatever moisture’s left on the road will get icy, and that’s tomorrow morning’s issue.  After that, we’ll be nearly issue-free for the weekend. (That’s WEATHER issues.  We’ve all got issues.)  So, here we go…

TODAY—Snow this morning with an additional inch possible.  It will taper off and end by lunchtime; then just cloudy this afternoon.  Once the snow tapers off, road conditions will improve quickly because the temperature will be above 32o all afternoon.

TONIGHT—Clearing and, with light to moderate breezes, many major roads will dry off.  The low will drop to the upper 20s which means water and slush will freeze.  Be careful tomorrow morning.  But the weather news is all good for…

The Weekend

SATURDAY—How’s about a nice sunny day?!  Check out the high temperatures for Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the “Local Forecast” on this page!  Beautiful.

SATURDAY NIGHT—Clear, except for some valley fog.

SUNDAY—will live up to its name as another sunshine-filled day.

The Workweek

MONDAY—Clouds make their return but the chance of precipitation is very slight, until nightfall.  This time it should be rain, which may continue into early…

TUESDAY—Clearing by afternoon.

WEDNESDAY—Partly to mostly…cloudy, that is.

THURSDAY—Partly cloudy and, with the wind kicking up, it may feel like the coldest day of the week.

FRIDAY—Mostly cloudy.
